A retaining wall is a structure, not a border
A wall holding a slope is carrying tons of saturated soil, and in Louisiana that soil holds water. Walls fail here because they were built without drainage behind them, without deadmen tying them into stable ground, or without enough embedment at the base. Ours are built to handle the load and shed the water.
We use retaining walls to level usable yard out of a slope, terrace a grade change, protect a foundation from washout, and stop erosion on banks and side yards. Residential or commercial, treated timber, block or custom masonry — the engineering approach behind it is the same.

Almost always water. Saturated clay behind a wall with no drainage builds enormous hydrostatic pressure and pushes the wall out. We build drainage in behind every wall and tie the wall back into stable ground so that pressure never has anywhere to build.
It is often part of the fix. A wall that redirects and holds grade, combined with corrected drainage behind and around it, is how we solve most yard washout and standing water issues on sloped lots.
Treated timber is faster and more cost-effective and suits most residential grade changes. Segmental block and custom masonry cost more and take longer but give a finished, maintenance-free masonry look. Both are structurally sound when built correctly.
